Doing it Yourself .. say you just want to use that 5-10
MB of personal web space you pay for with your account from your Internet
Service Provider (ISP) or are willing to put up with an ad-supported free web
account (e.g. www.freeservers.com) ..
Just how do you get your message out there on the web?
You can do it yourself. Although you can just code the
HTML by hand from a plain vanilla text editor, you have many other useful tools
to assist you get started included on your Win9x CD. Take a deep breath, so:
- Try FrontPage Express .. the commercial FrontPage programs
baby brother: FrontPage Express was part of a typical Windows 98 setup.
To open it, we just click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories,
point to Internet Tools, and then click FrontPage Express.
Unfortunately the download version has been removed from the Windows
Update site (under Internet Authoring in Product Updates).
If the above doesn't work for you, try clicking
here or here for a standalone version of FrontPage Express, or try any one
of the many other HTML editor programs which abound on the internet .. e.g.
1st Page 2000 by Evrsoft -- a
free HTML editor with lots of features including built-in Javascript
generation.
.. for other options see also:
.. Google: Computers
> Software
> Freeware
> Editors
> HTML
-
Then run the FrontPage Express program by clicking on the
Windows Start button, select Programs, then Internet Explorer,
and then FrontPage Express.
| "FrontPage Express is a Web-page editor
that gives you full access to the power of HTML (Hypertext Markup
Language). You can use FrontPage Express to create and format Web pages in
HTML, working in a WYSIWYG ("what you see is what you get") view,
so you can see how your formatting and layout will actually appear." |
Check out the 'Help' for detailed instructions on getting
started and using the program.
-
We recommend you create a master folder for your web
ramblings, everything you want to go up on the web, for example in c:\My
Documents\www .. Name your starting web page as 'home.htm'. This page will
provide a starting point with links to all pages to be accessed on yoursite.
After you are happy with your site ..
-
Copy the web files to the Internet by running the Web
Publishing Wizard program by clicking on the Windows Start button,
select Programs, then Internet Explorer, and then Web
Publishing Wizard. Microsoft Web Publishing Wizard provides you with an
easy way to transfer your personal Web pages to your Internet service
provider's Web server. Remember, you must first initiate a connection to your
ISP before you can use the wizard to publish your files.
Details, details, details: To get started, make sure you have
or know the following:
-
The protocol your service provider supports, such as FTP,
HTTP Post, or CRS. (Most ISP's like Telus support the FTP protocol).
-
The Uniform Resource Locator (URL or website name) for the
Web server you need to use to publish your files. (e.g. Telus URL is http://www.telusplanet.net
).
-
The name of the folder on the server where you are to
publish the files. With telusplanet.net, you will be publishing your account
to a folder called 'public_html'.
-
You will also be prompted to provide your userid and
password (usually the same one used to access your email) before the
program will permit you to copy any information to your ISP. After successful
file transfer, you can test your site by typing in your access URL (e.g. on
Telus you type www.telusplanet.net/public/userid
to access your site ..).
