Safe Surfing Tips
The internet is a large place with a wide range of content. Responsible
parents will take steps to protect their tender charges from the inappropriate
while enabling access to the beneficial. Although MS Interet Explorer provides
basic protection (the Content Advisor feature) via RASCi,
less than 5% of existing sites are rated and new sites are being added
continually, so overall protection is minimal. The following links may provide a
solution at a reasonable cost. These shareware and demo companion program
listings extracted from www.download.com
provide solutions in three main functional categories:
- Monitoring (program that records sites accessed within existing browsers),
- Filtering (add on program that blocks access to inappropriate material
within existing browsers), and
- Replacement (browsing program or add on that provides restricted
access to pre-approved sites).
Each of the programs listed below have pros/cons. Although your requirements
may differ from ours, we preferred and recommended WizGuard (www.wizguard.com --
now defunct) for best value and effectiveness in blocking inappropriate sites.
However, on some Win98 machines we have experienced sporadic lockups in WizGuard
(most machines have no problem .. and this situation is to be fixed by new
version 1.3 to be released by mid-Feb.99). Our number two recommendation is CyberSitter
(www.cybersitter.com). This newly
released update to the popular Cybersitter97 program features a handy
auto-update of filter sites and automatic forwarding to random ok sites.
The down side? Only rated sites are blocked by CyberSitter whereas with WizGuard
sites are rated 'on the fly' based on content. Your choice. Be safe and have
fun!
