emote Access over the Internet!
Wouldn't it be great if you could sign on to the internet at home and then
fire up a remote control program to access programs and data on your computer at
work?
That is the claim of the new version of Carbon Copy v 5.0 from Microcom,
newly acquired by Compaq. To be honest, this capability has existed for some
time in this and other popular remote access programs. To date, however, to use
the internet (TCP/IP) access, you had to specify the IP address of the computer
you are trying to access and it had to be connected to the internet for at least
the time you will be wanting to connect. It's unlikely you would have a
permanent IP address or that you could afford to leave the internet connection
on all night. However, in the right situation, say - you want me to connect to
your computer and take a peek under the hood for you, this ability would be just
what the doctor ordered.
One promising enhancement with CC v 5.0 is that the new public ILS servers
provided by Microsoft and others can be used to facilitate the linkup over the
Internet. The PC waiting for a call automatically connects to one of the ILS
servers using it's local internet access number. The PC attempting to control
that PC can then access the ILS server via the Internet, get the required IP
information automatically and complete your remote access connection and voila -
remote control over the internet (i.e. no more long distance charges required).
Caution: Testing access via the ILS servers can be frustrating - the are free
and also used for the popular NetMeeting connections and therefore can be
VERY busy.
A 30 day trial version of the CC v5.0 software can be downloaded from the
Internet from www.compaq.com
.. well worth a look.
Symantec offers a similar product as a free (Remote version only) Java or
ActiveX based pcAnywhere plug-in to your Netscape or Internet Explorer browser.
If you already have the pcAnywhere v8.0 Host version (purchased separately) on
the computer you are trying to access, you are all set. However, you will still
have to specify an IP address (which is different for every time you connect in
most setups). See the free download page at www.norton.com/pcanywhere/express/fs_pcaexp.html.

Web Page Space Camp
What's cool and 'cheep'? Just as in the TV and Radio industry, many companies
are lining up to provide you with free internet products and services. In return
for putting up with ads scattered here and there, you can get free email
accounts, megabytes of free web-page storage space for your personal web page,
guestbooks, page counters, message boards, or a even free automatic online
electronic store (to a maximum of 10 products) for your company. With these
tools in your quiver, you can create a fairly sophisticated and usable web site
- dedicated to the memory of your Teddy Bear or even just to show off your
family photos. You could even create something useful!
Take a look at maxpages.com/ssdirect.
Cute birdie, eh. This is a free web page using some of my favorite freebie
sites. Want a web site in 5 minutes? The setup is really just that quick. The
text entry will take a little longer. This free web page summarizes just a few
of the many freebies available on the net today and demonstrates just what can
be set up in only a day or two.
