Backup Strategies
Just in case. Do it .. you will thank me for it later! As personal
computer hard drives expand in size .. many of you have well over 10 GB hard
drives now .. it becomes important to backup your data. The burning question
is just how to accomplish this giga-task.
- One popular solution is to acquire a CD-RW burner .. they are dropping
in price over time and finally increasing in speed and reliability .. but
each CD only stores up to 600 MB or .6 GB so several disks are required for
backup and although the life expectancy of the disks are good, the burning
process is slow, awkward, subject to error and the disks themselves can
subsequently be scratched or easily misplaced. I know .. you think I might
be a pessimist.
- You want to use a backup tape, or zip disks? We have had nothing but
headaches with media and drives wearing out or becoming obsolete. When you
go back to retrieve the data, it is sometimes nice to actually be able to
read the data. We used to use the LS-120 floppy drive because it also
supported the standard 3.5 inch FD disks .. but even they tended to wear
out and are not even available to buy any more. Hmmm.
- A better solution that we now recommend is the installation of a
removable HD tray. As hard drives are relatively inexpensive and very fast,
this is a great method for offsite backup and disaster recovery or even
just for data transfer between offices. All you need is an available
5.25" slot, the tray insert and your extra hard drive. Cost is about
$40 CDN for each tray insert - plus the cost of the desired hard drive.
Once installed, you have all the speed and functionality of a second hard
drive, with the added option of popping it out and storing it offsite.
Cool.
