reating HTML Formatted Email
This month we continue focusing on internet basics. I was recently asked to
explain how to create fancy HTML formatted email, in 1 minute or less .. on a
phone inquiry. OK. I'm game, but I needed a bit more time to explain the finer
points and do justice to the subject. The description below is extracted from
the email I sent to explain the process to my inquiring knowledge seeker.
How to create an HTML formatted message using Outlook Express 6?
- Start up the Outlook Express 6 program. Other programs have similar
capabilities, but I will only address the OE6 specific commands to get the job
done in this article.
- Use a standard windows copy (highlight text, 'Edit', 'Copy') to get the
original text to work with .. e.g. from another email or some other window.
- Click on 'Create Mail' to start a blank email.
- Click 'Format' and make sure 'Rich Text (HTML)' vs 'Plain Text' is
selected.
- Click 'View' and make sure 'View Source' is checked on.
- Then use standard windows paste ('Edit', 'Paste') to insert the copied
text into your new email window.
- Once the text is inserted, you can play with the format font, size,
attributes - bold, italic, underline, etc
- Use the 'Format Toolbar' (which looks like this ..)

to format the email text to desired format, much like any other windows text
editor, however:.
- The last icon on the bar is for inserting images (like the toolbar
image above)
- The second last icon is for viewing / inserting HTML links
- The third last icon is to insert a horizontal line
- The rest are pretty much intuitive ..
- Note the tabs at the bottom for 'Edit', 'Source', 'Preview'
(these are displayed when the View Source setting is on)
so you can preview the result prior to sending the email
- Suggest you stay away using from 'blue
text' as except for actual hyperlinks to avoid confusing your
readers ..
- Final step .. Enter the desired email address and subject and then click
'Send' to email it!
