Free AVG Updated

 ree AVG Updated ..

Many of you have been turned onto the Free AVG (anti-virus software .. for non-commercial home users) for Windows. A version is also available for Linux Servers. Even the non-free commercial version is a great deal - about half the cost of Norton for twice the time (i.e. a 2 year licence). The free version is a no brainer. Excellent protection (better than Norton in my humble opinion) and an unbeatable value. Up to this month the free version was version 6.0. From this time forward, the new free version will be version 7.0. OK. So what does that me to you? Well, if you had the old free version, you need to upgrade to the new one to continue to get updates and stay protected.

Update Downloads: Go to www.grisoft.com webpage and click on the 'AVG Free Edition' link in the left column and then the 'Download the New AVG Free Edition Now..' link on the resulting page. The new version is a little cleaner and a bit more automated. You no longer have to confirm your email address before downloading and the free edition license number is automatically inserted for you.

I have recently fixed several virus infected computers which were assumed to have been protected by Norton programs. I suppose the automatic update failed or perhaps some type of trojan program disabled the antivirus software somehow. At any rate, we (the poor client and I) were less than thrilled. AVG has worked well for me in such situations, often identifying and removing several virus infections that Norton seemed to have had no clue about. AVG also has a clean interface to your email and scans in and out-going messages by default for you.

I should also mention my favorite spam detection software to be Ad-Aware SE (also recently updated. You get this one from www.downloads.com, then search for 'Ad-Aware'. It may not detect and remove every imaginable threat, but the interface is easy to use and very reliable. It only identifies and removes actual spyware.threats.
