Kindle 3

Last month I broke down and ordered a Kindle 3 from amazon.ca .. it showed up just about a week later. Much quicker delivery than expected. The electronic paper display is amazing, the battery life fantastic, and the WIFI access is ever so cool. Loads of free downloads are available - eg from gutenberg.org but so far my best non-free download was the LDS eLibrary (on Kindle Store the 2008 version is only $10 but an updated verison (with more additional reference documents) is also directly available from ldsbookclub.com at $20). It contains all the LDS scriptures, manuals, cross-references and most importantly has loads of hyperlinks and indexes throughout. At first I just downloaded lots of PDF versions from LDS.org .. but found it very tedious trying to get to the right page and could only open one book at a time.
The eLibrary version lets me just click a link from the manual to go directly to the scripture reference and then click back to pop right back to where I was. Due to the size of the reference (48MB), I do notice an occasional delay in page turns or look ups (aside: my downloaded PDF verision of Bible is 35MB by itself and the Triple Combination is 21MB). Overall, however, is is quite usable and it fits in my suit coat pocket.

My sister in law is an iPhone user. She immediately tried to pinch and swipe the screen to get around. Sorry. Kindle is just not that kind of a device. You have to use the 5-way pointer or the next/prev buttons although there are some neat shortcuts. I quickly found the device easy to read and use. I installed Calibre a neato free opensource ebook manager (lucky for you, it works with Linux and Windows and supports many ebook device types including the Kindle). I use it to convert my existing documents to ebook format or to download newspaper versions automatically off the web. Yay.

Other favorite features: It will read text to you in male or female voice or can play background music while you read .. and it fits nicely into my suit coat jacket pocket.
